Vietnamese Classifiers
Choose the classifiers used before common Vietnamese nouns.
cái
piece; item; general classifier for objects
'cái' is the most common classifier for objects in Vietnamese, used for general items and things you can pick up. It also appears in phrases like 'this one' or 'that one.'
Tôi mua một cái bàn mới.
I bought a new table.
con
animal classifier; piece (for animals)
'con' is mainly used for animals, but also appears in some fixed phrases for objects with animal-like shapes, such as boats, roads, or knives.
Nhà tôi có một con chó.
My family has a dog.
người
person; individual
'người' is used to count people, similar to 'person' or 'individual' in English. Vietnamese does not add another classifier for people.
Trong lớp có mười người.
There are ten people in the class.
quyển / cuốn
volume; book; notebook
'quyển' and 'cuốn' are used for books, notebooks, and other bound items, similar to 'volume' or 'book' in English.
Tôi đang đọc một cuốn sách tiếng Việt.
I am reading a Vietnamese book.
chiếc
vehicle; item; piece
'chiếc' is commonly used for vehicles, hats, shoes, bags, watches, and other single items. It is more specific and concrete than 'cái', emphasizing a single, distinct object.
Anh ấy mua một chiếc xe máy.
He bought a motorbike.
bức
picture; sheet
'bức' is used for photos, paintings, letters, and walls. It is similar to 'picture', 'sheet', or 'piece' in English, but only for certain nouns.
Tôi chụp một bức ảnh ở Hà Nội.
I took a photo in Hanoi.
tờ
sheet; copy
'tờ' is used for paper, newspapers, documents, tickets, and other thin, flat items.
Bạn cần điền một tờ đơn.
You need to fill out a form.
ly / cốc
cup; glass
'ly' and 'cốc' both mean 'cup' or 'glass' and are used to count drinks or drinking vessels.
Tôi muốn một ly cà phê sữa đá.
I want an iced milk coffee.
bát / tô
bowl
'bát' and 'tô' both mean 'bowl' and are used for servings of rice, soup, noodles, and similar foods.
Tôi ăn một bát cơm.
I eat a bowl of rice.

pair; couple
'đôi' is used for things that naturally come in pairs, such as shoes, socks, chopsticks, earrings, and can also refer to a pair of people.
Tôi mua một đôi giày mới.
I bought a new pair of shoes.
vị
a polite classifier for people; honorific classifier
vị is a polite and formal classifier used for people, often for teachers, guests, experts, etc.
Có ba vị khách đang chờ.
There are three guests waiting.
tấm
sheet; piece; flat object
tấm is used for flat, thin, or board-like objects such as photos, maps, or wooden boards.
Tôi có một tấm ảnh gia đình.
I have a family photo.

set; group
bộ is used for sets of things such as clothes, teaching materials, furniture, or movie collections.
Tôi mua một bộ quần áo mới.
I bought a new set of clothes.
cặp
pair; couple
cặp indicates paired people or items, often used for couples or paired objects.
Họ là một cặp vợ chồng trẻ.
They are a young married couple.
chuyến
trip; run (of vehicle)
chuyến is used for trips, vehicle runs, flights, and similar single journeys.
Tôi có một chuyến đi Đà Nẵng.
I have a trip to Da Nang.
lần
time (occurrence)
lần indicates the number of times an action occurs.
Tôi đã đến Việt Nam hai lần.
I have been to Vietnam twice.
món
dish; item
món is commonly used for dishes and can also refer to certain items or gifts.
Tôi thích món phở này.
I like this bowl of pho.
căn
unit (room/house); building
căn is used for houses, apartments, rooms, and similar living spaces.
Tôi thuê một căn hộ nhỏ.
I rent a small apartment.
tòa
building; block
tòa is used for large buildings, structures, and institutions like courts.
Đây là một tòa nhà cao.
This is a tall building.

cây is used for trees and also for long, thin objects like pens and umbrellas.

I bought a new pen.
quả

quả is commonly used for fruits and also for round objects like balls.
Tôi ăn một quả táo.
I ate an apple.

piece; fruit
trái is commonly used for fruits, especially in southern Vietnamese spoken language.
Tôi mua ba trái xoài.
I bought three mangoes.

bottle
'chai' means 'bottle' and is commonly used for water, beer, drinks, etc.
Tôi mua một chai nước.
I bought a bottle of water.
gói
package; bag
'gói' is used for items packaged in bags, such as cookies, instant noodles, or service packages.
Tôi mua một gói mì.
I bought a package of instant noodles.
việc
matter; thing; task
'việc' can nominalize verbs and also mean 'a matter' or 'a task'.
Việc học tiếng Việt cần thời gian.
The matter of learning Vietnamese requires time.
